I could not have imagined that I was in the presence of a molecular biologist with a postgraduate degree from the University of Heidelberg (Germany), especially when she bluntly told me that she was dyslexic, although she has a very Spanish first surname, her maternal roots are German. I suppose that her language is also German

She guesses wrong because my mother never spoke German to us. In fact, English was spoken at home because my parents lived in South Africa for many years and my brother was born there. When they came back, my brother didn't speak Spanish and we were both sent to British school. I actually started studying German when I was in the third year of secondary school. I spent six years in Germany and my husband is German, so now it's the language we speak as a family.
