Apple exports from Poland 2020/2021 (until May)

2021-07-28 11:29
May was another month, after April, in which Polish apple exports fell. Both in volume and in value. This trend was exacerbated by a lower average export price for Polish apples in June.

The cumulative volume of apple exports in the 2020/2021 season (from July 2020 to May 2021) amounted to 682.8 thousand tonnes, and its value reached 1269.4 million PLN (1.3 billion PLN), according to the Central Statistical Office. In quantitative terms, the current season is therefore worse than the previous two. However, the difference between this season and the previous one is not so great.  In terms of export value, it is significantly weaker than the 2019/2020 season, but better than the 2018/2019 season.

Compared to the 2018/2019 season, the decrease in the quantity of apples exported was: 248.6 thousand tonnes, down 26.7 per cent. On the other hand, the increase in value (in February the value was still lower than two years ago) was 46.5 million, or 3.8 per cent.

Compared to the 2019/2020 season, the decrease in volume was only 13.96 thousand tonnes, or 2.0 per cent, and 97.6 million zlotys, or 7.1 per cent.

And what is the breakdown of apple exports by month?

In volume terms, May saw exports fall by 6.6 per cent compared to March, the weakest result since January this year. Compared to the March export peak, the decline in May was 27.8 per cent.

In contrast, May 2021 to May 2020 saw an increase of 47.8 per cent.

As for the value of apple exports in May 2021, it was 11.2 per cent lower than in April and (as with volume) the lowest since January. Compared to the month with the highest value, March, May was 31.7 per cent worse.

Between May 2021 and May 2020, we see a fall of 3.1 per cent in the value of apple exports.

Let us now look at the average export prices of Polish apples (bearing in mind that their value is slightly understated in the presented data, as they also include apples for processing).

In May 2021 we saw a continuation of the downward trend in the average export price of apples started in April. The average price fell compared to April from 1.90 PLN/kg to 1.80 £PLN/kg, i.e. by 4.9%. This means an increase in the dynamics of this trend (the fall from April to March was only 0.5 per cent), but the year-on-year decrease was even higher.

The average export price in May 2020 was 2.75 PLN/kg, which means that in May 2021 it was lower year-on-year by as much as 34.5 per cent. It must be remembered that the end of the 2019/2020 season was marked by a sharp rise in apple prices. However, the average price in May 2021 was as much as 46.7 per cent higher than two years ago, when apples remained very cheap.
