The volume of banana imports (CN category 08039010 - Fresh bananas) in the first quarter of 2021 amounted to 135.9 thousand tonnes, with a value of 369.0 million PLN. This represents a year-on-year decline in both volume and value terms.
In the first quarter of 2020, imports in this category amounted to 152.9 thousand tonnes and PLN 393.5 million. This results in a year-on-year decrease in volume by 17.0 thousand tonnes, or 11.1%, and a decrease in value by PLN 24.4 million, or 6.2%.
The average price of bananas imported to Poland amounted to 2.72 PLN/kg in the first quarter of 2021, compared to 2.57 PLN/kg in the corresponding period of 2020, i.e. up by 5.8 per cent.
As for changes in the geographical structure of banana imports to Poland between the first quarter of 2021 and the same period of 2020, they were limited at the top of the ranking of suppliers.
In first place, Ecuador strengthened, from where imports increased from 66.6 to 66.8 thousand tonnes.
Colombia remained in second place with a decrease in the volume of deliveries to Poland from 44.7 to 31.2 thousand tonnes.
Costa Rica remained in third place with a reduction in volume from 15.7 to 16.5 thousand tonnes.
Guatemala has risen from fifth to fourth, increasing its banana supplies to Poland from 6.1 to 7.4 thousand tonnes.
Cameroon moved up to fifth place from sixth, with an increase in volume from 2.6 to 4.2 thousand tonnes.
Out of the top five (down from fourth to sixth place), Panama saw its banana imports fall from 7.4 to 2.9 thousand tonnes.
The highest average price among these countries in the first quarter of 2021 was for bananas imported from Cameroon, at PLN 2.90 per kilo. The cheapest bananas were imported from Colombia at an average of PLN 2.54/kg, while those from the largest supplier, Ecuador, had an average price of PLN 2.81/kg. As you can see, the price differences between the main banana suppliers during the period in question were small.
