Banana imports to Poland after Q2 2021

The volume of banana imports (CN category 08039010 - Fresh Bananas) in the first half of 2021 amounted to 270.5 thousand tonnes, and its value to 725.0 million PLN. This means a year-on-year decrease in both volume and value terms.

In the first half of 2020, imports in this category amounted to 296.9 thousand tonnes and PLN 754.0 million. This means a year-on-year decrease in volume by 26.4 thousand tonnes, or 8.9%, and a decrease in value by PLN 29.0 million, or 3.8%.

The average price of bananas imported to Poland was 2.68 PLN/kg in the first half of 2021, compared with 2.54 PLN/kg in the same period of 2020, i.e. up by 5.5 per cent.

Ecuador remains the leading banana supplier to Poland, although imports from this country decreased from 132.3 to 123.7 thousand tonnes between the first half of 2020 and 2021.

Colombia remained in second place with a decrease in volume from 81.7 to 61.8 thousand tonnes.

Costa Rica has strengthened its position in third place by increasing deliveries from 35.0 to 41.1 thousand tonnes.

Guatemala has risen to fourth place from fifth, with a volume increase from 13.7 to 18.5 thousand tonnes.

Cameroon, the largest non-American supplier, moved into fifth place from sixth. Here the volume increased from 4.0 to 6.2 thousand tonnes.

Outside the top five - down from fourth to seventh place - was Panama, whose banana deliveries fell from 19.6 to 5.4 thousand tonnes.

The highest average price among these countries in the first half of 2021 was for bananas imported from Cameroon, at PLN 2.96 per kilo. The cheapest bananas were imported from Colombia and Costa Rica at an average of PLN 2.60/kg, while those from the largest supplier, Ecuador, had an average price of PLN 2.75/kg. As you can see, the price differences between the main banana suppliers during the period in question were small.
