Bananas are getting more expensive in Poland

2021-02-16 13:09
Banana prices in the Polish wholesale market have been on the rise since October 2020, with fairly long periods of price stability between increases. It was only at the end of the first half of January that the upward trend in banana prices gained momentum. The cumulative increase from mid-January to date has been almost 22 per cent for wholesale prices.

As a result, banana prices in the Polish large wholesale market are currently at a level of most often 4.44-4.80 PLN per kg. This represents a year-on-year increase of 13 per cent and an 11 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2019. The difference is not large and looking at wholesale banana prices over the last ten years it is clear that current prices are not out of the typical level. In six of the last ten seasons it was more expensive (highest average in 2018 - 5.90 PLN/kg), in four it was cheaper.

The period of February-March is a typical time of price increases for bananas on the Polish market. The second half of February tends to be the peak of this upward trend, although just as often the trend extends into March and sometimes even into April. Then banana prices start to fall. So far this season has not deviated from this pattern, so we can assume that this scenario will continue in the coming weeks.
