Bananas are more expensive in Poland than a year ago

2021-10-18 11:31
Banana prices in the Polish wholesale have been increasing since the beginning of September. The average price for large wholesalers has increased by a fifth during this period. Currently, these prices are usually between 4.00 and 4.16 PLN/kg. It can also be expected that the upward trend in the price of this fruit has not yet ended.

The situation on the banana market in Poland is of course a consequence of the global situation and the problems experienced by the banana industry and, more broadly, the entire global trade. A huge problem has become logistics and its rapidly rising costs, which is hitting such relatively cheap, mass goods as bananas. In addition, the anti-covid policy is also generating a significant increase in manufacturing and shipping costs for producers and exporters.

On the other hand, bananas are certainly not a commodity whose prices can be easily increased on the European market, including in Poland. Consumers quickly react to this with a fall in demand. Therefore, the industry has looked for opportunities to reduce other costs and cut margins. It is difficult to say how effective such measures will prove in the long term, but for now it is clear that banana prices have not gone out of kilter. Over the last 10 years, around October, prices in the Polish large wholesale market have ranged from 3.40-3.60 PLN/kg (e.g. 2016, 2017, 2020) to 4.40-4.60 PLN/kg (2011, 2012,2014), and the current average is 4.08 PLN/kg, so there is still a considerable margin to these upper values achieved by bananas.
