Blackcurrant shortage on the Polish market

2021-07-30 11:01
Blackcurrant buying season in Poland is still going on, but has definitely entered its final phase. This can be seen from the increasing problems with obtaining raw material by purchasers. Some buying stations are already running out of currants for this reason. And yet, the demand for blackcurrants is still high and if only there were fruit, companies would be happy to buy them.

The entire currant season this year has been marked by a huge disproportion in demand and prices between black and red currants. The former were highly sought after and relatively well paid. Next to raspberries, blackcurrants were the only fruit that paid reasonably well this season. Red currants were not in demand and prices were very low.

When it comes to prices, blackcurrants for freezing were bought at 3.80-4.40 PLN/kg. Currants for pressing had prices in the range of 3.60-3.80 PLN/kg. On average, for the 2021 season, purchase prices of black currants increased by 25 per cent and ended it at the level by 29 per cent higher than a year ago.

Red currants are bought at 0,50-0,75 PLN/kg, and the scale of this purchase is small, because the demand from processors throughout the season was very limited. Prices of these currants in the season increased on average only by 9 percent. At the end of the season, the average purchase price for red currants is 15 percent higher than a year ago.
