Blueberries in Poland have gone the way of the cherry

2021-07-29 10:13
On the domestic wholesale blueberry market in Poland we have a situation that is largely a repeat of the cherry scenario. First, hopes for high prices due to the delay of the season, then indeed an expensive start, but immediately afterwards a brutal verification of expectations and a sharp downward trend. In the case of blueberries, this trend came as a big surprise to producers.

The drop in prices of Polish highbush blueberries proceeded at lightning speed this season and was caused, according to information from producers, primarily by the naked abundance of the fruit and the lack of interest from wholesale buyers. Interest in the Polish blueberry was catastrophically low. Especially when it comes to export. And this has brought the prices of this fruit in the large wholesalers to the level of 7.00-12.00 PLN/kg (bulk). As you can see from the graph, this is a level almost at a record low (in 2019 we had a quotation of 9.00 PLN/kg at the end of July).

Producers point to problems with exports, but also say that a significant blow to domestic blueberry prices has been high imports. So here, too, we have a similarity to the cherry market. Imported blueberries came to Poland in droves, taking advantage of the delayed start of this year's season. Then, the supply of domestic fruit grew quickly and blueberries from Spain, where the season was extended, still dominated in retail chains.
