Blueberry season in Poland starts with a high price

2021-06-28 11:25
Vegetation of highbush blueberries, like other fruits, was delayed this year due to cold weather in spring. It was only in June that nature started to catch up a bit. But even so, this year's commercial blueberry season is starting with a slip and high prices.

Even higher than last year's prices, and yet things were not going well for the blueberry industry in June 2020 either. Back then, it was cold in June and this delayed the season and the average wholesale price on 21 June 2020 was, according to fresh-market.pl monitoring data, 40 PLN/kg.

Now we have even higher prices, ranging from 40.00-48.00 PLN per kilo, which gives an average of 44.00 PLN per kilo. And in small wholesalers, prices reach 50 PLN. The supply of domestic blueberries is currently very low, but it can be assumed that it will grow rapidly in the first decade of July. Information from the blueberry sector shows that production of this fruit in Poland remains in the growing phase. This may translate into prices, as was also seen last year - see graph.

But it should also be borne in mind that the demand for blueberries is growing very dynamically. And not only in Poland, but even more so in Europe. This creates opportunities for Polish blueberry exports and should therefore have a stabilizing effect on prices.
