Cucumber imports to Poland in 2020 based on GUS data
The volume of cucumber imports to Poland (CN category 070700 - Cucumbers and gherkins, fresh or chilled) amounted to 66.3 thousand tonnes in 2020, with a value of 296.5 million PLN. This means a slight decrease in the volume of imports in this category, with a simultaneous greater decrease in its value.
This is because in 2019, cucumber imports amounted to 65.6 thousand tonnes and 252.7 thousand tonnes, respectively, resulting in a decrease in volume by 0.8 thousand tonnes, or 1.1 percent, and a decrease in value by 43.9 million PLN, or 17.4 percent.
The average price of cucumbers imported to Poland (calculated as the quotient of the total value of these imports by their total volume) was 4.47 PLN/kg in 2020 compared to that in 2019 of 3.85 PLN/kg. This gives a year-on-year increase in the average price of 16.1 per cent.
When it comes to changes in the geographical structure of cucumber imports to Poland between 2019 and 2020, there were quite a few in the top five rankings.
First place was strengthened by Spain, from which imports increased from 31.5 to 30.3 thousand tonnes.
Germany remained in second place with an increase in volume from 8.1 to 8.2 thousand tonnes.
Russia moved up to third place from 28,000 tonnes to 5,900 tonnes.
The Netherlands dropped to fourth place from third with a drop in volume from 6.5 to 5.1 thousand tonnes.
Greece remained in fifth place despite a reduction in volume from 5.3 to 4.5 thousand tonnes.
Romania dropped out of the top five (from fourth to ninth place) with a reduction in deliveries from 5.6 to 1.3 thousand tonnes.
Among the five largest suppliers, the highest average price in the three quarters of 2020 was for lemons imported from Germany at PLN 7.08 per kg (obviously, this is re-export from third countries). Turkish lemons, on the other hand, were the cheapest with an average price of PLN 3.54 per kg. Fruit imported from Spain, the biggest supplier, had an average price of 5.10 PLN/kg.
Among the five largest suppliers, cucumbers imported from Russia had the lowest average price in 2020 at 3.63 PLN/kg. German cucumbers, on the other hand, were the most expensive with an average price of 5.61 PLN per kg. Cucumbers imported from the largest supplier, Spain, had an average price of 4.66 PLN/kg.
