Currants on the Polish market - strongly varying prices for processing

2021-07-13 11:28
In the past week, the buying season of currants for processing started in Poland. It is still very preliminary and only few companies are buying. So far, only red currant has started. Black currant purchase and prices are still only discussed.

Processors would be very happy to buy blackcurrants, but the problem is that the season is delayed and there is not much fruit, and processors need a steady stream of raw material after starting the line.

The situation on the currant market for processing is very diverse. However, it is quite similar to last year. Blackcurrants are in very high demand, but processors have limited interest in redcurrants.  As for the expected availability of these fruits, it is expected to be exactly the opposite. There will be more red currants and fewer blackcurrants.

Problems with supply of the latter are not only the result of unfavourable weather conditions. It is primarily a consequence of the price realities of previous seasons. Back in 2019, and especially in 2018, blackcurrants were very cheap and the industry did not want them in the quantities that were then available. The opposite was true of red currant. Therefore, the crop of the former has shrunk sharply and that of the latter has increased.

This has resulted in the current prices. Buyers currently offer 0.60-0.80 PLN/kg for red currants (plants up to 1.00 PLN/kg and this is even slightly lower than a year ago). For comparison, the 2018 season started with an average price of PLN 2.10/kg. Blackcurrant prices now being talked about in the market are PLN 3.00-3.50/kg (so comparable to last year). At the start of the 2018 season, the average purchase price for this fruit was just 0.40 PLN/kg.
