Dessert strawberries in Poland - not a happy end of the season

This year's commercial season for domestic dessert strawberries in Poland is slowly coming to an end. At least when it comes to the wholesale trade on a larger scale. Small quantities of late varieties of these fruits will be available for much longer.

This season started with a considerable time delay caused by the cold weather in spring. The supply of domestic strawberries in May and June remained relatively low and, as a result, prices at large wholesalers were quite high. In May this level was higher than in previous years.

Subsequently, the supply of strawberries increased, but due to the heat that hit Poland in July, due to storms, downpours and even hailstorms, the quality of the vast majority of strawberries reaching the market deteriorated considerably.

Consequently, prices for dessert strawberries came under severe downward pressure in July. How this ended can be seen in the graph above. Large-volume wholesale prices have fallen below the level of recent years and the end of the 2021 season looks dire for strawberry prices. Currently, these prices are mostly in the range of 4.00-6.50 PLN/kg, which is slightly higher than in recent days, but this does not change the overall assessment of the situation.
