Domestic strawberry season getting closer in Poland

2021-04-19 11:08
The Polish strawberry season is getting closer and closer, although there is still some time left before the fruit is regularly traded from the ground. But, as always, it will pass quickly and, for the time being, the first fruit from greenhouses is entering the market. This form of strawberry cultivation is gaining in popularity year on year. This can also be seen this year, although there is still a lockdown in the HoReCa sector, which is an important consumer of fresh strawberries in spring.

This is reflected in prices in Spain and Greece, which remain lower than in previous seasons. Although, interestingly, in Spain, in week fourteen, producer prices managed to break the downward trend that had been going on there since mid-February this year. Admittedly, prices rose to an average of €0.65/kg, up just a cent (+1.6 per cent). A year earlier it was 0.85 euros/kg.

Until last week, this had not caused a break in the downward trend in the prices of imported strawberries at the Polish wholesale market. But this week something of the sort may happen. For the time being, prices in large-scale wholesale offers are most often between 6.00 and 10.00 PLN per kg, 50 per cent less than at the end of March.

The weather in Europe, including Poland, will be key to further developments. If it is sunny and warm, local strawberries will quickly gain in importance. And in Spain the season is already beyond the halfway point and now the current supply will fall there. With poor weather, this could lead to a temporary price rise (if there is a gap between the ending Spanish season and the delaying local season).
