Export of beetroot from Poland in 2020 based on GUS data

The export volume of beetroot (CN category 07069090 - Salad beet, salsify, radish, other edible roots except carrots, turnips, celeriac (root and German) and horseradish, fresh or chilled) in 2020 amounted to 13.3 thousand tonnes and its value to PLN 32.0 million. This represents a large year-on-year decline in both volume and value terms, and it is worth noting that exports in this category have been declining for another year in a row.

Indeed, in 2019, exports in this category amounted to 18.2 thousand tonnes and 51.3 million PLN. This gives a decrease in volume by 4.8 thousand tonnes, or 26.6 percent, and a decrease in value by 19.4 million zlotys, or 37.7 percent.

The average price of vegetables from this category exported from Poland in 2020 was PLN 2.40/kg compared to PLN 2.83/kg in 2019. This gives a year-on-year decrease of 15.2 per cent. At the same time, it should be remembered that this category includes several vegetable species with varying prices.

As for changes in the geographical structure of exports in the category in question between 2019 and 2020, they were significant in the top five largest buyers, although there was no change in the first two places.

Slovakia remained at the top of the list despite a decrease in volume from 4.3 to 4.0 thousand tonnes.

The Czech Republic remained in second place with a reduction in volume from 3.6 to 2.5 thousand tonnes.

Germany moved up to third from fifth place, although volumes also decreased year-on-year from 1.7 to 1.3 thousand tonnes.

Romania has dropped to fourth place from third with a volume shrinkage from 2.3 to 1.0 thousand tonnes.

Hungary moved up to fifth place from sixth, but also with a lower volume than a year ago - a fall from 1.1 to 1.0 thousand tonnes.

Ukraine has dropped out of the top five from fourth to ninth place with a volume decrease from 1.8 to 03,000 tonnes.

The most expensive vegetables in this category were exported in 2020 to Romania - an average price of 3.53 PLN/kg, and the cheapest - to the Czech Republic - 1.80 PLN/kg. The largest recipient, Slovakia, bought them at an average of 2.10 PLN/kg.
