Export of frozen blackberries from Poland at the end of Q2 2021

2021-09-06 10:57
The volume of frozen black berries exported from Poland (CN category 08119050 - Fruits of the species Vaccinium myrtillus, uncooked or cooked by steaming or boiling in water, frozen, not containing added sugar or other sweeteners) amounted to 7.6 thousand tonnes in the first half of 2021, and its value to 94.0 million PLN. This means an increase in imports in this category both in terms of quantity and value.

In the first half of 2020, frozen berry exports amounted to 6.6 thousand tonnes and PLN 75.5 million. This means a year-on-year increase in volume by 1.0 thousand tonnes, or 15.0 per cent, and an increase in value by PLN 18.5 million, or 24.5 per cent.

The average price of frozen blueberries exported from Poland (calculated as the total import value divided by the total quantity) amounted to 12.44 PLN/kg in the first half of 2020 compared to 11.49 PLN/kg in the same period of 2020. This gives an increase in the average price year-on-year by 8.3 per cent.

It should be noted, however, that this indicator is distorted by a disproportionately low price of one of the importers - Belarus (1.64 PLN/kg), which plays a role in the overall balance. Admittedly, Belarus' quantitative share in this category has fallen significantly year-on-year (from 8.5% of Poland's total frozen berry exports to 4.6%), but the impact of this undercutting of the Belarusian price is still significant. If we remove Belarus from the ranking, the average price will be at the level of 12.36 PLN/kg in the first half of 2020 and will rise to 12.97 PLN/kg a year later (+4.9 per cent, so the relative change is significantly smaller than if we include the improbable Belarusian price).

In the ranking of Polish frozen berry buyers in the first half of 2021, Germany came out on top, rising from second place thanks to an increase in volume from 1.3 to 2.2 thousand tonnes.

France has dropped from first to second place, with its blueberry exports decreasing from 1.4 to 1.3 thousand tonnes.

The Netherlands rose to third from tenth place with an increase in volume from 0.3 to 0.6 thousand tonnes.

Sweden remained in fourth place with 0.6 thousand tonnes.

Norway moved up to fifth place from sixth place, although with a decrease in volume from 0.5 to 0.4 thousand tonnes.

Outside the top five were:

Lithuania - a drop from third to thirteenth place and a volume reduction from 0.7 to 0.1 thousand tonnes.

Belarus - down from fifth to eighth place and a reduction in volume from 0.6 to 0.4 thousand tonnes.

In the first half of 2021 Poland exported the cheapest frozen berries to Holland, at 12.19 PLN/kg on average, among the five largest buyers. The most expensive export was to Norway, at an average price of 16.05 PLN/kg, and the average price for the largest customer, Germany, was 12.29 PLN/kg.
