Export of frozen currants from Poland in 2020 based on GUS data

2021-03-24 10:25
Volume of frozen currants exported from Poland (CN categories: 08112039 - Black currants uncooked or cooked by steaming or boiling in water, frozen, not containing added sugar or other sweetening agent and 08112051 - Red currants uncooked or cooked by steaming or boiling in water, frozen, not containing added sugar or other sweetening agent) amounted to 52.2 thousand tonnes in 2020 and its value reached PLN 169.8 million. This means a decrease in exports in this category year-on-year, but only in volume terms, while its value increased.

Indeed, in 2019, exports of black and red currants amounted to 59.2 thousand tonnes and 169.8 million PLN. This gives a decrease in volume by 7.0 thousand tonnes, or 11.8 percent, and an increase in value by 23.1 million PLN, or 13.6 percent.

As average prices of both types of currants can differ significantly, we will consider them separately. Average export price for frozen black currants in 2020 was 3.87 PLN/kg compared to 2.39 PLN/kg, which means year-on-year increase by 61.9 per cent. The average price of frozen red currants was 3.36 PLN/kg in 2020 against 4.16 PLN/kg in 2019, a decrease of 19.2 per cent.

We will also consider the geographical structure and its changes in 2019 and 2020 separately. Blackcurrants - the top five recipients are:

Belarus remained in first place despite a decrease in volume from 16.7 to 9.9 thousand tonnes.

The United Kingdom came in third, up from fifth place, with volumes increasing from 2.8 to 3.0 thousand tonnes.

The Netherlands dropped to fourth place from third with volumes that decreased from 2.9 to 2.5 thousand tonnes.
