Export of frozen currants from Poland in Q1 2021

2021-06-11 11:16
Volume of frozen currants exported from Poland (CN categories: 08112039 - Black currants uncooked or cooked by steaming or boiling in water, frozen, not containing added sugar or other sweetener and 08112051 - Red currants uncooked or cooked by steaming or boiling in water, frozen, not containing added sugar or other sweetener) amounted to 13.8 thousand tonnes in the first quarter of 2021 and its value reached 51.4 million PLN. This means a decline in exports in this category year-on-year, but only in volume terms, while its value increased.

In the first quarter of 2020, exports of black and red currants amounted to 14.6 thousand tons and 47.3 million zlotys. This gives a decrease in volume by 0.9 thousand tons, i.e. by 5.9 percent, and increase in value by 4.1 million PLN, i.e. by 8.7 percent.

As average prices of both types of currants can differ significantly, we will consider them separately. Average export price for frozen black currants in the first quarter of 2021 was 4.22 PLN/kg compared to 3.12 PLN/kg, which means year-on-year increase by 35.2 per cent. The average price of frozen red currants was 2.96 PLN/kg in the first quarter of 2021 against 3.44 PLN/kg in 2019, a decrease of 13.8 per cent.

We will also consider the geographical structure and its changes in the first quarters of 2020 and 2021 separately. Blackcurrants - the top five buyers are:

Belarus remained in first place with an increase in volume from 3.3 to 3.5 thousand tonnes.

Germany remained in second place with a reduction in volume from 2.2 to 1.9 thousand tonnes.

The United Kingdom came in third, up from fourth place, with an increase in volume from 0.6 to 0.8 thousand tonnes.

Serbia moved up to fourth from seventh with a volume of 0.4 thousand tonnes.

Belgium dropped to fifth from third with a volume of 0.7 to 0.3 thousand tonnes.

France has gone from fifth to sixth with a volume reduction from 0.6 to 0.3 thousand tonnes.

In the first quarter of 2021, the most expensive frozen black currants from Poland were purchased by the United Kingdom at an average price of 6.33 PLN/kg and the cheapest was Belarus at 1.48 PLN/kg. It seems that this price is underestimated in relation to price levels for all other buyers.

Red currants - the top five buyers are:

Germany remained in first place despite a decrease in volume from 1.9 to 1.7 thousand tonnes.

Serbia remained in second place with an increase in volume from 0.6 to 0.9 thousand tonnes.

France moved up to third place from fourth with an increase in volume from 0.4 to 0.5 thousand tonnes.

Belarus has risen to fourth place from sixth, increasing its purchases from 0.3 to 0.5 thousand tonnes.

Belgium dropped to fifth place from third with a volume of 0.5 thousand tonnes.

The Netherlands has gone from fifth to sixth with a volume of 0.3 thousand tonnes.

Frozen red currants from Poland are the most expensive of the five buyers in the first quarter of 2021 in France at an average of 3.99 PLN/kg, Belarus is the cheapest at 1.72 PLN/kg and the largest buyer, Germany, at 2.86 PLN/kg.
