The export volume of onion (CN category 070310 - Onion and shallots, fresh or chilled) in the first half of 2021 amounted to 80.9 thousand tonnes, and its value reached 159.6 million PLN. This means a decline in exports in this category year-on-year both in volume and in value terms.
In the first half of 2020, exports in this category amounted to 89.5 thousand tonnes and PLN 202.3 million. This gives a decrease in volume by 8.6 thousand tonnes, i.e. by 9.6 per cent, and a decrease in value by as much as PLN 42.8 million, i.e. by 21.1 per cent.
As far as the average price of onion in export in the discussed period is concerned, since we analyse the aggregated category (onion, spring onion and shallots), we will refer only to the prices of the category 07031019 - Fresh or chilled onion, except spring onion. In the first half of 2021, the average price of this onion was 1.87 PLN/kg, compared to 2.14 PLN/kg in 2020, which means a 12.6 per cent decrease.
The Netherlands, which increased its volume from 19.5 to 21.2 thousand tonnes between the first half of 2020 and the same period of 2021, ranked first in the ranking of Polish onion buyers.
The second place is occupied by the United Kingdom, where the volume decreased from 18.9 to 17.3 thousand tonnes.
Belgium moved up to third place from fifth with an increase in purchased onion volume from 7.2 to 10.7 thousand tonnes.
Germany moved up to fourth place from sixth, increasing its volume from 6.0 to 6.1 thousand tonnes.
France is in fifth place, down from third place with a decrease from 10.2 to 6.0 thousand tonnes.
Outside the top five - down from fourth to ninth place - is Ukraine, where onion exports have fallen from 8.9 to 1.4 thousand tonnes.
It should be noted, however, that France is the only country among those mentioned which, in the structure of Polish onion imports, is dominated by shallots. If only onions of category 07031019 are taken into account, France, with a volume of 3.8 thousand tonnes, is below Germany and Romania.
As for the average prices of onion exported to these countries (also taking into account only the 07031019 category), the most expensive Polish onion was sold in the first six months of 2021 to the Netherlands - at an average of 2.05 PLN/kg, and the cheapest to Belgium - at an average of 1.42 PLN/kg.
