Export of pears from Poland in Q1 2021

The export volume of pears from Poland (CN category 080830 - Fresh pears) amounted to 43.0 thousand tonnes in the first quarter of 2021, and its value was 45.1 million PLN. This means a slight increase in the volume of exports in this category year-on-year with a much greater relative decrease in its value.

In the first quarter of 2020, exports in this category amounted to 40.3 thousand tonnes and PLN 63.7 million. This gives a year-to-year increase in volume by 2.7 thousand tons, i.e. by 6.7 percent, and a drop in value by PLN 18.6 million, i.e. by 29.2 percent.

The average price of dessert pears exported from Poland in the first quarter of 2021 was 1.05 PLN/kg compared to 1.58 PLN/kg in the same period of 2020, which means a year-on-year decrease by 33.5 per cent. But if we exclude the selling price of pears for Belarus (more on that later), the average is at 3.50 PLN/kg compared to 3.49 PLN/kg a year earlier!

In the first quarter of 2021, there were only three large buyers of Polish pears. Compared to the same period in 2020, Russia has dropped off the list (a drop in volume from 1.1 thousand tonnes to just 19 tonnes).

Belarus took first place with an increase in volume from 35.3 to 39.3 thousand tonnes.

Ukraine remained in second place with a decrease in deliveries from 1.8 to 1.5 thousand tonnes.

Kazakhstan rose to third place from fourth with an increase in volume from 1.1 to 1.4 thousand tonnes.

As far as average prices of Polish pears exported in the first quarter of 2021 to the three largest buyers are concerned, the highest, according to CSO data, was the price of fruit sold to Ukraine - 3.84 PLN/kg, and the lowest for those exported to Belarus - 0.86 PLN/kg, but this value is so low that it is hardly credible. The next lowest price for Polish pears was for exports to Bulgaria at 1.74 PLN/kg, more than double the price for Belarus. Pears sold to Kazakhstan had an average price of 2.08 PLN/kg.
