The volume of potato exports (category 070190 - Potatoes, fresh or chilled, excluding seed potatoes) in the first quarter of 2021 amounted to 55.2 thousand tonnes, and its value to 29.8 million PLN. This means record-high exports in this category, especially in terms of volume (more than double the volume of the entire previous year). Let us add that this growth was generated mainly by one country.
In the first quarter of 2020, exports in this category amounted to 6.7 thousand tonnes and PLN 9.1 million. This means a year-on-year increase in volume by 48.5 thousand tonnes, i.e. by 724.2%, and an increase in value by PLN 20.7 million, i.e. by as much as 227.7%.
The average price of potatoes exported from Poland in the first quarter of 2021 was at the level of 0.54 PLN/kg. In the same period of 2020 it was 1.36 PLN/kg, which means a 60.3 per cent decrease of an average price year-to-year.
In terms of changes in the geographical structure of potato exports between the first quarter of 2020 and the corresponding period of 2021, these were fundamental.
Ukraine entered the first place from the seventh, increasing the volume of potatoes purchased in Poland from 0.2 to 49.5 thousand tonnes.
Moldova has risen to second place from fourth, increasing its volume from 0.5 to 2.2 thousand tonnes.
The third position was occupied by Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was absent the previous year, with a volume of 1.3 thousand tonnes.
Germany moved up to fourth place from tenth, increasing its purchases from 52 tonnes to 0.7 thousand tonnes.
The United Kingdom dropped to fifth place from second place with a volume decrease from 1.6 to 0.6 thousand tonnes.
Outside the top five are two countries that were in the top three a year ago:
Romania dropped from first to sixth place with a volume reduction from 3.0 to 0.3 thousand tonnes,
Hungary went from third to seventh with a volume reduction from 0.6 to 0.2 thousand tonnes.
Among the top five buyers, potatoes exported in the first quarter of 2021 had the highest average price in the case of sales to Germany - PLN 2.86/kg, which seems overvalued compared to export prices to other countries. The cheapest potatoes were sold in the period in question to Ukraine - at an average of PLN 0.48/kg.
