The volume of strawberry exports from Poland (CN 081010 - Strawberries and strawberries, fresh) in 2020 amounted to 14.9tys tonnes, and its value to 59.8 million PLN. This means an increase and a very large increase year-on-year.
In 2019, the volume of exports in the category in question amounted to 6.5 thousand tonnes and its value closed at 44.4 million PLN. Year-on-year, this means an increase in volume by 8.4 thousand tonnes, i.e. by as much as 129.7 per cent in volume terms, and by PLN 15.4 million, i.e. by 34.7 per cent.
As for the average price of onions in imports during the period in question, looking at CSO data shows that it is not fully reliable. In 2019 and 2020, exports to South Korea were shown with average prices of 146.18 zlotys/kg and 124.31 zlotys/kg, respectively. On top of this, exports to the UAE were shown in 2020 at £0.04/kg. Excluding these outliers, the average price of fresh strawberries exported from Poland in 2020 was 3.99 PLN/kg versus 6.71 PLN/kg, a year-on-year decrease of 40.5 per cent.
When it comes to changes in the structure of strawberry exports between 2019 and 2020, first of all, it can be seen that the source of the large increase in exports was the purchases of Belarus. But also the structure of the top five buyers has changed significantly.
Belarus has strengthened its leadership position by increasing the volume of strawberry purchases from 1.7 to 10.7 thousand tonnes.
The Netherlands moved up from third place to second despite a volume drop from 0.9 to 0.7 thousand tonnes.
Germany dropped to third place from second with a volume decrease from 1.3 to 0.6 thousand tonnes.
Austria has risen to fourth place from fourteenth with an increase in volume from 97 tonnes to 0.4 thousand tonnes.
The United Kingdom moved up to fifth place from twenty-fourth with an increase in volume from 12 tonnes to 0.4 thousand tonnes.
Outside the top five are: Belgium (falling from fourth to seventh place) with a volume reduction from 0.5 to 0.3 thousand tonnes and Denmark (falling from fifth to eleventh place) with a volume decrease from 0.3 to 0.1 thousand tonnes.
Among the top five countries, the highest average price in 2020 was for strawberries sold to Germany at 12.81 PLN/kg. And this was an above-average price compared to the other destinations. The second highest price was in the UK with an average price of 5.82 per kilo. The lowest average price was for strawberries sold to Belarus, where the price was clearly below average at 2.07 PLN per kilogram.
