Few imported blueberries in the Polish Market

2021-05-10 11:00
This spring, Polish blueberry lovers do not have it easy. The availability of imported blueberries remains limited, which translates into their prices. Before the Spanish export campaign started and only blueberries from the southern hemisphere were available on the market, it was not better. But then you could count on the fact that when imports from Spain started, there would be more fruit and prices would fall.

Meanwhile, the opposite has happened. Instead of falling, prices have risen compared with the end of last year. At that time, the average price in small wholesale trade for packaged fruit (250g each) did not exceed 40 PLN/kg. Now these prices range from 30 to even 60 PLN/kg. The most common price for nice fruit is 35-50 PLN/kg. In the large wholesale trade, prices are at 15-26 zł/kg, depending on the calibre, quality and packaging.

The reason for the supply problems and high prices is the weather. The weather has been exceptionally capricious throughout Europe, also in Spain. Especially in recent weeks, it has been cloudy and cool there, which has stopped the growth of the current harvest and caused price rises. In week seventeen the average producer price there was €4.83/kg, 3 per cent more than in week sixteen. This is also much more expensive than: one year ago (€3.50/kg) and two years ago (€2.92/kg). Spanish experts estimate that at the end of week seventeen, 41 percent of the blueberry volume expected for the whole campaign had been harvested there. So the period of greatest supply of Spanish blueberries is ahead and will continue until the twenty-second week.
