First young beetroots already on the Polish market

The first batches of young beetroots have already reached the local wholesale markets. We say "already" because although the second half of April is the typical time for the start of trade in these vegetables, this year we have had less than ideal weather conditions and the season for young vegetables is somewhat delayed.

Young beetroot, as it is at the start, is offered in bunches. How quickly this will change depends largely on the weather. This year, unlike 2020, there was no shortage of rainfall. As the weather gets warmer, vegetation will accelerate quickly and the supply of young beet and the calibre of its roots will increase rapidly.

And what is the price situation for young beet this year? It is important to remember that we are in the second consecutive season marked by the negative effects of the coronavirus pandemic. This year, the pandemic, or rather the lockdown, is having an even more devastating effect on the vegetable market and the level of demand for vegetables than it did a year ago. Especially when it comes to the catering sector.

The first price quotations for young beet at the small wholesale market are not far from the usual level. On the wholesale market in Bronisze near Warsaw they are currently offered at 2.85-3.50 PLN/bunch. At the beginning, prices reached 5 PLN/bunch. In a year-on-year comparison, the current average price of 3.17 PLN/bunch is already slightly lower than last year's 3.50 PLN/bunch, but then prices were also falling and as early as on 21 April it was 3.13 PLN/bunch.

In any case, the season will not be easy for beet (unless weather excesses strongly affect the fall in harvest). This can be seen from this year's season. When young beets, which always tend to cheapen quickly, enter the market, there is still no shortage of beets from the 2020 harvest and their prices on the fresh market are very low, at 0.45-0.65 PLN/kg for washed and bagged beets.
