Gala apples - demand in Poland lower than a year ago

2021-02-04 12:16
The Gala variety remains one of the most popular apples in Europe, alongside Golden and Prince. These apples are selling significantly better than other red varieties or Mutsu, not to mention Idared.

Nevertheless, demand for Gala apples is currently lower than in the same period last year. WAPA's data on stocks of this variety show that in December2019 the "run-off" of Gala apples was higher - both across Europe and in Poland - than in December 2020, while stocks on 1 January 2021 were higher than a year earlier: Europe 441 thousand tonnes to 426 thousand tonnes (+3.5 percent) and Poland 120 thousand tonnes to 95 thousand tonnes (+26 percent).

As you can see, Polish Gala stocks are significantly higher year-on-year in percentage terms than in Europe as a whole. This could be beneficial in the final phase of the season, provided demand for the apple remains good and the quality of Polish stocks allows exports).

For the time being, Gala prices in the Polish large wholesalers are lower than last year, as can be seen in the graph above. Apples of calibre 65+ are currently bought at 1.50-1.70 PLN/kg, that is 13.5% cheaper year on year, and calibre 70+ at 1.70-2.00 PLN/kg, that is 14% cheaper year on year.
