Greenhouse cucumbers in Poland- supply still a problem

2021-02-03 11:30
The first batches of cucumbers from the new domestic crop have reached the Polish market. Although these vegetables are available all year round, their supply is drastically reduced in January and the retail market (especially chain stores) is then almost entirely dominated by imports.

So the new harvest has started and the supply of domestic cucumbers will increase. For the time being, however, it remains very low. In addition, the weather has not been favourable to a rapid increase so far. Prices are therefore high and are likely to remain so for some time. Currently, wholesale selling prices (which are still small in terms of quantity) are most often at the level of 11.00-13.00 PLN/kg.

Such high prices of the domestic offer are supported by equally high import prices. Long cucumbers from Spain are offered in the Polish wholesale at 7.00-11.00 PLN/kg, depending on quality and packaging. This is a result of problems with current production faced by Spanish growers due to the winter on the Iberian Peninsula. There is, however, a chance that import prices will fall, as the average price at wholesale auctions in Almeria has fallen from €1.36/kg to €0.34/kg over the past two weeks, or 75.0 per cent. In Poland, this could see import prices fall by 50 per cent to an average of 4.50 PLN /kg.
