Greenhouse cucumbers up, ground cucumbers still cheap in Poland.

2021-08-10 12:19
This week in the wholesale trade of greenhouse cucumbers in Poland we have had a surge in prices. Between the end of last week and now, the prices of greenhouse cucumbers at the big wholesale increased by 67 percent, i.e. by two thirds of the initial price. Now the price range for these cucumbers is most often 2.50-3.00 PLN/kg.

As you can see on the chart, we have here an almost exact repeat of the situation from a year ago. We have the second highest average price over the last ten years. At the same time it is clear that this upward trend is unlikely to continue on the scale seen last year. The weather has improved somewhat and the supply deficit is not as great.

Greenhouse cucumbers are rising in price, while field cucumbers are getting cheaper again. It is true that the beginning of August saw an increase in wholesale prices of this cucumber due to the rainy weather, which left a negative impact on the pace of harvest and supply, but since the end of last week there has been a downward trend in this segment again. Ground cucumber prices at buyers are at 2.30-2.50 PLN/kg for "canned" and 1.30-1.50 PLN/kg for "sour". In small wholesalers, the prices of these cucumbers have dropped to 2.50-4.00 PLN/kg.

Producers are unanimous - this year ground cucumber prices are too low in relation to cost realities. For production outlays have risen significantly. Especially harvesting costs. In addition, due to weather conditions, pests and especially fungal diseases are a major challenge this season. And plant protection in the EU is becoming increasingly difficult. These factors may lead to a decline in cucumber production next season.
