High grape prices on the Polish market, but...

2021-03-29 11:33
March is not a good time for grape lovers in Poland, but also in Europe more widely. The supply of this fruit is usually low this month and prices are high. The reason is, of course, the lack of local offer (mainly from Italy) and the necessity to import these fruits from distant countries - from South America (mainly Chile), from Africa (South Africa) or from India.

Currently the situation in Polish wholesale (and retail) trade in grapes does not differ substantially from this pattern. The supply of grapes is limited and their prices quite high. But when comparing them with last year, it is clear that there are no big differences.

Wholesale prices in importers' offers are usually 6.00-14.00 zł/kg for dark grapes, which averages 10.00 zł/kg, and 9.00-15.00 zł/kg for light grapes, which averages 12.00 zł/kg. A year ago dark grapes were at a higher wholesale price of 9.00 zł/kg (so we have here an increase year-on-year by 11 percent), and light grapes at 13.00 zł/kg (so we have here a decrease year-on-year by 8 percent).

Relatively lower prices of light grapes are a result of the fact that a lot of grapes, especially light ones, have started arriving in Europe from South Africa in the last days. The start of the season there has been somewhat delayed and there has been an accumulation of the current supply. There has also been an increase in the supply of Indian grapes, which may not play an important role on the Polish market, but on a European scale they are influencing the overall supply of this fruit.

The question is what will happen to the supply of grapes and many other imported fruits from Asia and South Africa in the coming days? Last week, a container ship got stuck across the Suez Canal and has been blocking it ever since. How soon will the Egyptians manage to unblock this vital route and restore supplies to Europe?
