High supply of domestic courgette on the Polish market

2021-07-15 11:18
The fall in wholesale courgette prices in Poland started back in the third decade of June and has since shown considerable momentum. For three weeks, courgette prices at large wholesalers fell by as much as 71 percent to the current level of 1.00-1.60 PLN/kg.

This is the result of a rapid increase in the current supply of this vegetable, triggered by sunny and warm weather. Of course, excessive heat and extreme weather phenomena (hailstorms, thunderstorms) are a significant threat to crops and their quality, but they have not been as destructive for courgette as they have been for fruit.

As a consequence of the high supply of courgette and the dynamic downward trend of its prices, the latter are at a relatively low level for this phase of the season. Now, the average price at large wholesalers is 1.30 PLN per kg, while a year ago it was 2.20 PLN per kg (and the supply peak and the lowest prices were only around August 10). Two years ago, the average price was as high as 2.80 PLN/kg. It was significantly cheaper around 14 July 2018, but even then the price was slightly higher than now, at PLN 1.35/kg.
