The volume of apple imports (CN category 080810 - Fresh apples) to Poland amounted to 21.5 thousand tonnes in 2020, with a value of 86.1 million PLN. This is not much compared to Poland's apple exports. But at the same time, it is a much larger import than the year before.
In 2019, 7.9 thousand tonnes of these fruits were imported to Poland for PLN 25.7 million. This means a year-on-year increase in volume by as much as 13.6 thousand tonnes, or 172.4 per cent, and an increase in value by PLN 60.4 million, or as much as 234.9 per cent.
The average price of apples imported to Poland was 4.01 PLN/kg in 2020 compared to 3.26 PLN/kg in the same period of 2019, which means a year-on-year increase of 23.0 per cent. At the same time, it should be remembered that the 080810 category includes both dessert apples and cider apples, but prices for the latter are higher than for the former when imported. In 2020, the average price for dessert apples is 3.97 PLN/kg to 3.24 PLN/kg, an increase of 22.5 per cent. However, the quantitative share of cider apples in total imports in 2020 is only about 3.4 per cent.
When it comes to the geographic structure of imports in this category, there was a lot between 2019 and 2020 and it was significant with such a significant increase in the volume of apples imported into the country. When it comes to the top five suppliers, we can speak of fundamental changes here.
The Netherlands has risen to number one from ninth place, with deliveries increasing from 0.2 to 9.2 thousand tonnes.
Spain has risen from fourteenth place to second, with deliveries increasing from just 20 tonnes to 2.7 thousand tonnes.
Italy dropped from first to third place despite a volume increase from 2.3 to 2.7 thousand tonnes.
Germany has also dropped from third to fourth place, although here too deliveries have increased from 1.4 to 2.1 thousand tonnes.
Belgium has risen to fifth place from 21st to 21st, with deliveries increasing from 8 tonnes to 0.7 thousand tonnes.
Outside the top five fell Serbia, from second to thirteenth place and with a volume reduction from 2.1 to 0.1 thousand tonnes, and Macedonia, from where 0.4 thousand tonnes of apples were imported in 2019, with imports falling to zero a year later.
The most expensive imported dessert apples Poland, in 2020, imported, in terms of the top five suppliers, from Germany - with an average price of 6.48 PLN/kg, while the cheapest were from Belgium with an average price of 3.21 PLN/kg. Those from the largest supplier, the Netherlands, had an average price of 3.55 PLN/kg.
