Import of garlic to Poland in 2020 based on GUS data

The volume of garlic imports (CN category 070320) to Poland in 2020 amounted to 13,563 tonnes and its value reached PLN 122.1 million. This means a significant year-on-year increase in imports in this category, both in terms of volume and value.

In fact, in 2019, 10,297 tonnes of garlic were imported to Poland for the amount of PLN 64.9 million. This gives a volume increase of 3,265 tonnes, or 31.7 per cent, and a value increase of PLN 57.2 million, or 88.1 per cent.

The average price of garlic imported to Poland was PLN 9.00/kg in 2020 compared to PLN 6.30/kg in 2019, a year-on-year increase of 42.9 per cent.

When it comes to changes in the structure of garlic imports between 2019 and 2020, there were quite a few within the top five suppliers, although the leader of the list did not change.

Indeed, the first position was strengthened by Spain, from where imports rose from 5596 to 8523 tonnes.

China has risen to second from third, with deliveries increasing from 1098 to 2162 tonnes.

Egypt has dropped to third place from second, with imports falling from 2609 tonnes to 2104 tonnes.

Germany moved up to fourth place from fifth with an increase in volume from 289 to 396 tonnes.

Ukraine came in fifth from sixth with an increase in volume from 92 to 242 tonnes.

Portugal disappeared from the list of suppliers - in 2019 in fourth place with a volume of 509 tonnes.

As for the average prices of garlic imported to Poland in 2020, the highest average price among the five largest suppliers was that from Germany - 18.35 PLN/kg and this price clearly stood out from the others. Garlic from Spain, the second largest supplier on this list, had an average price of 9.58 PLN/kg. The cheapest of the top five suppliers was garlic from Ukraine with an average price of 5.55 PLN/kg.
