Import of pears to Poland in 2020 based on CSO data

The volume of pear imports to Poland (CN category 080830 - Fresh pears) amounted to 47.8 thousand tonnes in 2020, while its value reached PLN 205.6 million. This represents a year-on-year increase both in terms of volume and value.

In 2019, imports in this category amounted to 36.5 thousand tonnes and PLN 134.1 million. This gives a year-on-year increase in volume by 12.3 thousand tonnes, or 33.8 per cent, and an increase in value by PLN 71.6 million, or 53.4 per cent.

The average price of pears imported to Poland was 4.22 PLN/kg in 2020 compared to 3.68 PLN/kg in the same period of 2019, which means a year-on-year increase of 14.7 per cent. At the same time, it should be remembered that category 080830 includes both dessert and perry pears, but the share of the latter in total exports is less than 10 per cent.

As for the changes in the geographical structure of pear imports to Poland between 2019 and 2020, these were mainly of a quantitative nature among the top five suppliers.

The leader position was strengthened by the Netherlands increasing deliveries from 19.2 to 29.2 thousand tonnes.

Belgium moved into second place by increasing volumes from 3.5 to 6.8 thousand tonnes.

Spain dropped from second to third with a decrease from 4.0 to 3.7 thousand tonnes.

Portugal remained in fourth place with an increase in volume from 2.5 to 2.7 thousand tonnes.

South Africa moved up to fifth place from seventh with an increase in volume from 1.4 to 2.2 thousand tonnes.

Outside the top five (down from fifth to sixth place) is Germany with a reduction in volume from 2.3 to 1.9 thousand tonnes.

The most expensive imported dessert pears (category 08083090), Poland imported in 2020, in terms of the top five suppliers, were obviously from South Africa - with an average price of 4.88 PLN/kg, but the differences were not large. For although the cheapest pears from Belgium had an average price of 3.23 PLN/kg, those from the largest supplier, the Netherlands, had an average price of 4.20 PLN/kg.
