Imports of leeks to Poland in 2020 based on GUS data
The import volume of leeks (CN category 07039000 - Leeks and other bulbous vegetables fresh or chilled) to Poland in 2020 amounted to 7.9 thousand tonnes and its value to PLN 24.3 million. This means a significant year-on-year decrease in imports in this category.
This is because in 2019, these imports amounted to 11.9 thousand tonnes and PLN 43.1 million respectively. This gives a year-on-year decrease in volume by 4.1 thousand tonnes, or 34.1 per cent, and a decrease in value by as much as PLN 56.3 million, or 43.7 per cent.
The average price of leeks imported to Poland in 2020 was 3.09 PLN/kg. In 2019, it was 3.62 PLN/kg. So here we have a year-on-year decline of 14.6 per cent. The significant decrease in the volume of leek imports, when juxtaposed with the fact that the prices of these vegetables have fallen, seems even more significant.
When it comes to changes in the geographical structure of leek imports between 2019 and 2020, there was a lot in the top five.
Belgium remained in the leading position despite a decrease in volume from 5.9 to 3.7 thousand tonnes.
Germany moved into second position from sixth by increasing leek deliveries to Poland from 0.3 to 1.4 thousand tonnes.
This has pushed the Netherlands from second to third place. Dutch deliveries decreased from 2.4 to 1.3 thousand tonnes.
Spain remained in fourth place, although the volume decreased from 0.7 to 0.5 thousand tonnes.
France has dropped from third to fifth place, with deliveries falling from 2.0 to 0.3 thousand tonnes.
Out of the top five, Turkey has dropped from fifth to sixth place. Here the volume decreased from 0.5 to 0.2 thousand tonnes.
As far as the five largest suppliers are concerned, the most expensive leeks were imported in 2020 from Spain - at an average of 5.54 PLN/kg. The cheapest leeks were imported from Germany - at an average of 1.99 PLN/kg, while the average price from the largest supplier, Belgium, was 2.34 PLN/kg.
