Lemons - prices are still relatively low on the Polish market

2021-04-26 11:51
The current situation on the Polish wholesale market for fresh fruit is markedly different, as far as the lemon trade is concerned, from that usually observed at this time of the year. Indeed, a typical pattern in April and May is an increase in prices generated by a decreasing supply of lemons. After all, this is the time when the supply of fruit from Spain and then also from Turkey declines. Lemons imported from the southern hemisphere start to dominate the market.

The rise in wholesale lemon prices is not always as significant as it was during the "covid panic" in April and May last year (up from 8.00 zlotys/kg to 9.50 zlotys/kg), and it is certainly rare to see such a record-breaking rise as the one in April and May 2016 (from 6.60 zlotys/kg to 13.50 zlotys/kg), but the upward trend in this phase of the season is more than typical. In the previous ten years it occurred in each successive season.

And in the current season, instead of an increase, we have had a reduction in the wholesale price of lemons. The average wholesale price fell from 5.00 zlotys per kilo to 4.50 zlotys per kilo, i.e. by 10 per cent. This is a result of a relatively low demand for this fruit. Demand has been weakened since November last year due to the closure of the HoReCa distribution channel, which has hit the consumption of fresh squeezed lemon juice hard but also general demand for this fruit across Europe. In addition, the belief in the immunologically positive effect of lemons against coronavirus seems to have collapsed, which has also reduced demand in the fresh market.
