Low supply of greenhouse cucumbers on the Polish market

2021-12-01 10:57
Although greenhouse cucumbers from domestic production in Poland are now available year-round, the trade in these vegetables at the large wholesalers basically dies down in December. Especially in seasons when, for various reasons, the supply of cucumbers in Polish greenhouses is even lower than normal during this period. This is the season we have this year.

December, or, to be more precise, the end of November, brought such a decrease in the supply of domestic greenhouse cucumbers that it drastically increased their wholesale prices. In addition to production issues (agrotechnical), economic issues also play a role, led by rising fuel and electricity prices. Moreover, this factor has hit the greenhouse sector very hard also in other European countries, where the costs of greenhouse heating and lighting have increased in a short period of time by several hundred percent.

Polish greenhouse cucumbers have risen to 8.00-9.00 PLN/kg, which means an increase of 59 percent in just a few days. The current average price (8.50 PLN/kg) is, as you can see on the chart, the third highest in recent years. It is also 36 percent higher year-on-year. Imported cucumbers are also expensive. Currently, most imports from Spain are priced at 7.00-8.00 PLN/kg, 67 percent higher year-on-year. The prices of cucumbers are high at the producer's, in addition to more expensive transport and a weak zloty, which makes imports more expensive.
