Mandarins in Poland - smaller supply, poorer quality

2021-03-25 10:12
The mandarin season in southern Europe, especially in Spain, has entered its final phase. The supply of these fruits is rapidly decreasing and, in parallel, there are more and more quality problems. This is particularly the case with the Fortuna variety. The Clementale variety looks nicer, but not all consumers like it because it is difficult to peel.

Theoretically we should therefore expect an increase in mandarin prices under these circumstances. After all, they are becoming increasingly difficult to buy. Maybe not as much as last year, when European consumers, confronted for the first time with the unknown, which was the COVID-19 pandemic, bought a lot of citrus, which pushed up their prices.

On the Polish wholesale market in March 2020, mandarins were priced at 6.25 PLN/kg (by May this price had risen to 7.50 PLN/kg). However, things are different now. Mandarins are not getting more expensive. Their prices in the Polish wholesale trade on a larger scale remain within the range of 4.00-6.50 PLN/kg for fruit of smaller and medium calibres, depending on quality. This is an average of 5.25 PLN/kg, which is 16.0 per cent cheaper year-on-year.

Sooner or later tangerines will become more expensive, as the drop in supply will be significant enough to force a change in prices. But for now, limited demand for this fruit is standing in the way and, despite a general drop in supply, there is relatively more of it than last year.
