New domestic tomato season takes off in Poland

2021-02-02 10:28
A new season of domestic greenhouse tomatoes (round red) is starting slightly earlier than a year ago. As far as raspberry tomatoes from Polish glasshouses are concerned, they are available all year round, but in December and January, the supply decreases noticeably. Now, however, the current raspberry tomato harvest is starting to increase again.

For the time being, the increase in the supply of domestic tomatoes - whether red or raspberry - is still limited and slow. Especially as the weather is not in our favour. There is a lack of sunshine and it is cold. But we are already seeing prices react to the changing supply realities in the domestic tomato market.

This season, the first price quotations for red tomatoes at the small wholesaler level were at 90.00-110.00 zlotys per 6 kg carton. This is slightly less than in previous years, when the season started at PLN 120.00 per carton. In addition, for less than a week, prices have dropped to 80.00-110.00 zlotys per 6 kg carton, i.e. by 5 percent.

Prices of raspberry tomatoes have fallen in the meantime in the small wholesale level of 120,00-140,00 zlotys/carton of 6 kg to 110,00-140,00 zlotys/carton of 6 kg, that is by less than 4 per cent. Demand for such goods is low - lower than usual, as the main recipient channel for such an "exclusive" offer, i.e. catering, is still inactive. It also seems that until this changes, domestic tomato prices will continue to fall, with winter weather the only factor impeding this trend.
