Not enough cauliflowers on the Polish market and it shows in prices

2021-12-02 11:33
The main season of domestic cauliflowers in Poland ends this year in the large wholesalers in the second half of November with an increase in prices and, consequently, their record level. At the beginning of last month, the average selling price of these vegetables was at a level of 3.50 PLN per head at the large wholesaler, higher than that of the same period in at least ten previous years.

An upward trend covered domestic cauliflower prices almost throughout November. It was driven by the decreasing availability of these vegetables. As a result, wholesale prices at the end of November reached 4.00-5.00 PLN per head, and in early December reached 4.50-5.50 PLN per head.

It is only now that we are witnessing a downward correction of these prices, back to the level of 4.00-5.00 PLN/unit, which means a drop by 10 percent to the previous price and by 7 percent more year-on-year. However, this is not due to an increase in the supply of domestic cauliflower. Instead, its quality is deteriorating and import competition is increasing. It should be noted, however, that this year the supply of imported cauliflower is also limited and prices are high. Currently the selling prices are 6.00-7.50 PLN/unit. It could be cheaper if it were not for the very weak zloty.
