Onion prices on the Polish market - September is ending and prices are not falling

2021-09-29 10:25
Usually, onion prices in Poland fall during the harvest period, as a relatively large amount of commodity enters the market at that time, including a significant percentage of the commodity for quick sale, and therefore offered at lower prices, which directs the whole market. This year is different.

We are at the end of September and domestic onion prices remain stable. What is more, they are now slightly higher than in the early part of the season. Indeed, at the beginning of September, the average price of onions at the large wholesaler increased by 18 per cent. This can be seen in our graph below.

Currently, the prices of bagged and sized onions are at the level of 0.80-1.20 PLN/kg at the large wholesaler. As mentioned above, this is 18 per cent more than at the beginning of this month. It is also a quarter more expensive year-on-year and, as you can see on our graph, the current average price is the second highest in the last eleven years (only in the 2019/2020 season was it more expensive).

This gives a good indication of what the situation is on the onion market. The harvest of this vegetable is still ongoing, but there are a lot of problems with onions due to the previous weather. The rains have taken their toll on the frequency of diseases - very high this season. A lot of onions are rotting and mouldy. There will be fewer long-storage onions. At the same time, Dutch prices have strengthened in recent weeks, so there has been no pressure on our market from this side.

Onion prices in Poland will probably still fall, but everything points to the fact that this will not be a dynamic trend and that the discounts will not be large this season, and that the average price this season will remain one of the highest in recent years.
