Pears are plentiful in Poland and the price ...

2021-02-04 12:19
The supply of pears on the Polish market remains relatively high. Or even not "relatively", but simply "high". WAPA estimated, that the stock on January 1 of this year amounted to 26 thousand tons. This is as much as 270 per cent more than a year earlier. It is also the highest stock on that date in the last ten years. There were similar, but fewer in January 2019 (23,000 tonnes) and more in January 2010 (35,000 tonnes).

This higher supply can be seen in the prices of domestic pears on the Polish market. In the large wholesale market, prices of the most popular variety Conference (85 percent of Polish pear stocks are this variety) are currently most often 2.10-3.50 PLN/kg, depending on the calibre, quality and packaging. These prices have remained at a stable level since the second half of January, after an earlier slight strengthening.

A year ago, the situation was fundamentally different. In February, pears were already starting to be scarce in the large wholesale market and their prices were in an upward trend. Still on 7 February the average price amounted to 2.65 zlotys per kilo, i.e. it was less than 6 per cent lower than now, and already on 10 February it was 3.00 zlotys per kilo on average (+7 per cent to the current price), and February 2020 ended with the average price of the Conference at the level of 3.15 zlotys per kilo and the upward trend was continued to the end of the season.

In the current season, such a trend is unlikely, although it is possible that the prices of Polish pears will manage to strengthen a little. Especially if we manage to export some of them. The supply reality in Europe is slightly different - there is also more pears than a year ago, but only by about 16-17 per cent.
