Plenty of cherries on the Polish market

2021-06-24 11:11
Not so long ago, some media were bent on the fact that prices of cherries exceeded PLN 100/kg. But this was at the time when this fruit was imported to Poland from South America by air transport, which was not necessarily mentioned in those texts. Now the domestic cherry season is in full swing and the price of this fruit has been falling sharply over the last few days. But are cherries already as cheap as the proverbial borscht?

The downward trend in the prices of cherries at large wholesalers has continued since 10 June with a short break around the 15th of this month. By Wednesday morning, 23 June, cherry prices had fallen by 56 per cent on average. This reduction was the result of a rapid increase in the supply of domestic cherries, but not only. To a certain extent, it was also dictated by the fact that a very large proportion of the fruit coming onto the market was small and of poorer quality. Hence, from the start, we have had wide price ranges for domestic cherries.

Yesterday morning prices of cherries in the large wholesalers were at 6.00-9.00 PLN/kg, but in the evening the range widened again and it was 5.00-12.00 PLN/kg. We have something like a rash of early cherries (Burlata), but the heat is not conducive to the quality of fruit and good goods are better priced. An average price drop of more than 50 per cent in a fortnight is quite a lot, but are cherries cheap after this reduction?

In the large wholesalers, the average price is at last year's level and higher than two years ago, which means it is not so cheap. You can see from the graph that the situation has also changed to the extent that, for a while, this year's price was below that of the previous two years. But it is no longer. Certainly consumers will not say that cherries are cheap. At the retail level, you still have to pay 15 PLN/kg and more for decent quality fruit.
