Poland - news from the cabbage's market

2021-09-21 10:54
The situation on the white cabbage market, both in Poland and more broadly in Europe, is far from clear. It is a perfect background for heated discussions between sellers and buyers. The main topic is supply and how this will affect prices in the coming months of the season. Of course, the positions of the parties are easy to predict: producers - there is little cabbage, so prices will rise; buyers - there is plenty and it will be cheap.

Current prices suggest that the supply of white cabbage at Polish wholesalers is quite high; but there is no question of a harvest disaster. This can be seen on our chart. Large wholesaler prices are currently most commonly 0.45-0.60 PLN/kg, which puts the average (0.53 PLN/kg) at a level slightly lower than last year and quite low compared to previous seasons. This similarity to last year's price (0.55 PLN/kg) could suggest a similar further course of the season, i.e. a generally flat curve keeping prices at a relatively low level.

However, it should be remembered that since August we have had a very wet season, which is badly reflected in the quality and durability of ground vegetables, including cabbage. Now the supply may be relatively high, but lower prices are also influenced by the fact that a lot of the goods on the market are poor-quality cabbage, which needs to be sold quickly because it is not suitable for storage. A lot of cabbage is rotting in the fields and we can expect big differences between the net and gross harvest and significant losses in storage.

This means that the supply situation in the winter-spring period will be much more dynamic than last year. If these predictions are confirmed, cabbage prices could start to rise much faster than they did then.
