The volume of potato exports from Poland (category 070190 - Potatoes, fresh or chilled, excluding seed potatoes) after three quarters of 2021 amounted to 92.5 thousand tonnes, and its value to 56.5 million PLN. This means record high exports in this category, especially in terms of volume. Let us add that this growth was generated mainly by one country and in the 2020/2021 season.
After three quarters of 2020, exports in this category amounted to 14.7 thousand tonnes and PLN 20.0 million. This means a year-on-year increase in volume by 77.8 thousand tonnes, i.e. by 428.9 per cent, and an increase in value by PLN 36.5 million, i.e. by as much as 82.9 per cent.
The average price of potatoes exported from Poland in the three quarters of 2021 was at the level of 0.61 PLN/kg. In the corresponding period of 2020 it was 1.36 PLN/kg, which means a year-on-year fall by 55.1 per cent.
At the same time, potatoes exported from January to June (category 07019050) had an average price of 2.09 PLN/kg compared to 2.23 PLN/kg a year earlier (-6.3 per cent), and potatoes exported from July to December (category 07019090) 0.58 PLN/kg compared to 1.24 PLN/kg a year earlier (-53.20 per cent). Exports in this second category accounted for as much as 97.9 per cent of all Polish potato exports in the period in question.
In this period Ukraine came first from the second place and became a clear leader among buyers of Polish potatoes. The volume of export to Ukraine increased from 3.1 to 76.4 thousand tons. Exports to Ukraine in this period accounted for 82.6 percent of total Polish potato exports.
Moldova rose to second from third place with an increase in volume from 1.5 to 4.8 thousand tonnes.
Latvia moved up to third place from sixth with an increase in volume from 0.8 to 3.0 thousand tonnes.
Germany has risen to fourth place from twelfth, with purchases increasing from 0.2 to 1.8 thousand tonnes.
The United Kingdom has dropped to fifth place from second with a reduction in volume from 2.6 to 1.5 thousand tonnes.
Lithuania dropped out of the top five - from fifth to seventh - with volumes increasing from 0.8 to 1.0 thousand tonnes.
The top five buyers of potatoes in category 07019090, which dominate total exports of this vegetable, consisted of the same countries as above and in the same order. The most expensive in this category, in the discussed period, were potatoes bought by Germany, at 2.60 PLN/kg on average. The cheapest potato was exported to the largest buyer, Ukraine, at an average of just 0.49 PLN/kg. Moldova, second in the ranking, was buying almost as cheaply at 0.53 PLN/kg. Latvia, on the other hand, was buying at 1.05 zlotys per kilo and the UK at 1.09 zlotys per kilo. This shows the reason why the volume of exports in this period was more than five times higher year-on-year and the value "only" increased by 82.9%.
