Potato imports to Poland in 2020 based on GUS data

Volume of potato imports (categories: CN 07019090 - Potatoes, fresh or chilled except seed potatoes, potatoes for starch production, from 1 July to 31 December, and CN 07019050 - Potatoes, fresh or chilled except seed potatoes, potatoes for starch production, young, from 1 January to 30 June) to Poland amounted to 184.1 thousand tonnes in 2020, and its value to PLN 211.3 million. This means a significant year-on-year decrease in these imports, both in volume and in value terms.

This is because the volume of imports in this category in 2019 reached 263.9 thousand tonnes and its value PLN 377.6 million. This means a year-on-year decrease in volume by 79.9 thousand tonnes, or 30.3 per cent, and a decrease in value by PLN 166.3 million, or as much as 44.0 per cent.

The average price of potatoes imported to Poland in 2020 amounted to 1.15 PLN/kg (1.01 PLN/kg for category 07019090 and 1.57 PLN/kg for category 07019050) compared to 1.43 PLN/kg (1.25 PLN/kg and 2.17 PLN/kg respectively) a year before, which means a 19.6 per cent y-o-y drop.

In terms of changes in the geographical structure of potato imports between 2019 and 2020, these were significant within the top five.

Germany remained in first place despite a reduction in shipments from 85.9 to 57.6 thousand tonnes.

The Netherlands moved into second place from third with an increase in volume from 26.8 to 27.2 thousand tonnes.

Greece moved up to third place from sixth with an increase in volume from 16.1 to 23.0 thousand tonnes.

Spain moved up to fourth place from fifth despite a drop in volume from 19.1 to 16.0 thousand tonnes.

France went down to fifth place from fourth with a volume decrease from 22.0 to 16.0 thousand tonnes.

Outside the top five was the United Kingdom (down from second to sixth place) with volumes falling from 44.7 to 10.8 thousand tonnes.

It should be noted that of the countries in the top six, four supply the majority (more than 90 percent of the total volume) of late potatoes (category 07019090). These are Germany, the Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom. Spain and Greece mostly supply new potatoes in category 07019050.

Among the countries supplying mainly late potatoes, the highest average price in 2020 was achieved by the United Kingdom - £1.13 per kilo. The cheapest were potatoes from Germany - PLN 0.87/kg on average.
