Volume of potato imports (categories: CN 07019090 and CN 07019050 - Potatoes, fresh or chilled except seed potatoes, potatoes for the production of starch, young) to Poland amounted to 18.3 thousand tonnes in the first quarter of 2021, and its value to PLN 21.9 million.This means a significant year-on-year decrease in these imports, both in terms of quantity and value.
The volume of imports in this category in Q1 2020 reached 55.4 thousand tonnes, and its value PLN 63.0 million. This means a year-to-year decrease in volume by 37.0 thousand tons, i.e. by 66.9%, and a drop in value by PLN 41.1 million, i.e. by as much as 65.2%.
The average price of potatoes imported to Poland in the first quarter of 2021 amounted to 1.19 PLN/kg (1.05 PLN/kg for 07019090 category and 2.00 PLN/kg for 07019050 category) compared to 1.14 PLN/kg (1.04 PLN/kg and 2.21 PLN/kg respectively) a year earlier, which means a year-on-year increase by 4.4 per cent.
In terms of changes in the geographical structure of potato imports between 2019 and 2020, there were significant changes within the top five suppliers.
Germany remained in first position despite a decrease in delivery volume from 23.6 to 10.5 thousand tonnes.
Cyprus was promoted to second position from eighth with an increase in volume from 1.2 to 2.4 thousand tonnes.
France remained in third place despite a drop in volume from 8.8 to 2.0 thousand tonnes.
Egypt moved up to fourth place from seventh despite a decrease in volume from 1.2 to 1.1 thousand tonnes.
The Netherlands dropped to fifth place from second place with a volume reduction from 9.5 to 0.6 thousand tonnes.
Outside the top five are Belgium (down from fourth to sixth place and a reduction in volume from 3.2 to 0.6 thousand tonnes) and Great Britain (down from fifth to tenth place and a reduction in volume from 2.8 to 0.1 thousand tonnes).
Among the top five countries supplying mainly late potatoes (Germany, France, Cyprus, the Netherlands and Belgium), the highest average price for these potatoes in the first quarter of 2021 was recorded for imports from Cyprus - PLN 2.31 per kilo. The cheapest were potatoes from Germany - PLN 0.73 per kilo on average.
