Potatoes prices in Poland are not going up...

2021-02-11 10:57
The cold and snowy weather has left its mark on the market for fresh vegetables. It has pushed up the wholesale prices of a number of them. However, at least for the time being, potatoes are not included in this group. At least when it comes to prices on the large wholesale market.

This means that prices increased somewhat in February, because at the end of January the average wholesale price for yellow potatoes (45+9 calibre, packed in 15kg bags) was 0.30 PLN/kg, now it's 0.36 PLN/kg (a similar change occurred in the case of edible potatoes of varieties other than yellow), i.e. an increase of 20%, but firstly other vegetables saw more dynamic increases and secondly the current level of potato prices is just a return to the state of the first half of January this year.

At the moment, the aforementioned yellow potato prices are mostly in the range of 0.27-0.45 PLN/kg, red 45+ potatoes are selling for between 0.30-0.50 PLN/kg and white ones 0.40-0.53 PLN/kg. A factor that has somewhat revived the wholesale potato trade in Poland is the growing demand from Ukraine. However, this only applies to surveyed goods and therefore necessarily has a limited impact on the Polish potato market as a whole. Only the unblocking of catering and events would help here. As long as this does not happen, most domestic vegetables will be in a demand "hole".
