Potatoes without improvement - update from European and Polish markets

2021-02-19 10:22
In the large potato producing countries of north-western Europe, such as the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, trade in potatoes for the fresh market and for processing was fairly stable in February, with some recovery in Belgium and the Netherlands in terms of spot transactions.

Prices in these countries on the open market are currently mostly €5.00-7.00/100 kg for fresh market potatoes (0.22 PLN-0.31 PLN/kg). There is virtually no prospect of them strengthening. The market for processing potatoes is slightly different. There we can see a growing interest in good quality raw material, but compared to the "normal" season, demand is strongly weakened by lockdown.

As for forward prices, the last few days have seen a downward trend for April and June 2021. The average for April forwards fell on 15 February to 9.4 euros/100 kg and for June forwards to 12.1 euros/100 kg.

On the Polish edible potato market we had some price fluctuations in the small wholesale, which was related to snowfall and difficult logistics. At the large wholesaler level the situation was stable and selling prices for 45+ calibre yellow potatoes packed in 15 kg bags remained within the range of 0.27-0.45 PLN/kg (the upper limit for survey potatoes). Demand was generated mainly in retail and to some extent in export to Ukraine.
