Preliminary estimate of the tree fruit harvest in Poland in 2021

2021-08-02 10:34
The fruit harvest in Poland in 2021, according to preliminary estimates by CSO experts, is expected to total around 4.6 million tonnes. This means a year-on-year increase of around 3 per cent. The difference with respect to 2020 is small, but it should be remembered that the 2020 harvest was also higher than that of 2019.

The increase in the harvest this year compared to the previous year was made possible, according to experts, largely due to the weather. The abundant snow cover protected the trees from frost and provided the water necessary for vegetation during the melting period. However, the temperatures in March and April were not favourable. The spring was record cold this year. This slowed down the development of the buds (but this in turn protected them from frost). Consequently, the flowering period was shortened and pollinating insects had less time to flock to the flowers. "Conditions for optimum development of orchard crops improved significantly in June and July, with high temperatures favouring an increase in fruit weight. The problem in some regions of the country at that time was the intense weather phenomena (gusty winds, heavy rain, hail), which damaged some of the ripening fruit," reads the CSO release. Experts estimate that the tree fruit harvest should consequently be slightly higher than a year ago.

The total tree fruit production in 2021 was initially estimated by CSO experts at just over 4.0 million tonnes, some 3.3 per cent higher than last year. However, experts point out that maintaining this forecast will depend on the weather in the following months of the growing season.

The apple harvest has been provisionally estimated at 3.6 million tonnes, about 2.8 per cent higher than in 2019. "Despite unfavourable weather conditions during the flowering period and recurring weather anomalies such as drought or hail, the apple harvest can remain at a high level thanks to modern irrigation systems, anti-frost or anti-hail installations used in orchards," experts say.

The preliminary forecast for the pear harvest is 57,000 tonnes, an increase of about 1 per cent year-on-year.

The plum harvest has been provisionally estimated at as much as 110,000 tonnes, i.e. 10 per cent more than a year ago, and this is perhaps the most controversial forecast among fruit growers, who consider it to be grossly overestimated.

The cherry production has been provisionally estimated at more than 165 000 tonnes, 8 per cent higher than in 2020.

The cherry harvest is provisionally forecast at 58 000 tonnes, i.e. up by 17 per cent compared to last year.

The total harvest of other tree fruit species (peaches, apricots and walnuts) is expected to amount to 12.5 thousand tonnes, i.e. similar to 2020, according to preliminary estimates.
