Raspberry imports to Poland in 2020 based on GUS data

2021-03-05 11:57
The volume of fresh raspberries imported to Poland in 2020 (CN 08102010 - Fresh raspberries) amounted to 2.6 thousand tonnes, and its value to PLN 67.2 million. This means a significant year-on-year decrease in the volume of this import with an almost stable level of its value.

Indeed, in 2019, imports in this category amounted to 3.2 thousand tonnes and PLN 67.0 million, respectively. This gives a decrease in volume terms by 0.5 thousand tonnes, or 17.1 per cent, and an increase in value terms by PLN 0.2 million, or 0.3 per cent.

The average price of raspberries imported to Poland in 2020 was 25.38 PLN/kg against 20.98 PLN/kg in 2019. This gives a year-on-year increase of 21.0 per cent. However, in the case of fresh imported raspberries, the arithmetic average is not a good measure, as there are one-two countries in the top five suppliers with prices clearly lower than the others, as discussed below.

When it comes to the geographical structure of fresh raspberry imports to Poland and the changes in it between 2019 and 2020, there have been several reshuffles in the top five suppliers.

First of all, the leader of the list has changed and the Netherlands has risen to first place from second place with a volume of 705 tonnes of raspberries delivered to Poland.

Spain has risen from third place to second, with volumes increasing from 626 to 645 tonnes.

Ukraine dropped from first place to third, with a large reduction in volume from 860 to 535 tonnes.

Morocco remained in fourth place with a reduction in volume from 390 to 314 tonnes.

Germany moved up to fifth place from sixth with an increase in deliveries from 180 to 201 tonnes.

It replaced Moldova (down to sixth place), from where raspberry imports fell from 194 to 72 tonnes.

As for the average prices of raspberries imported from the largest suppliers, Ukrainian raspberry prices are clearly below the prevailing ones. In 2020, the price of raspberries imported from Ukraine was just 7.08 PLN/kg. The price from the most expensive supplier in the top five, the Netherlands, was 37.41 PLN/kg. This can be explained by the fact that raspberries from Ukraine (and Moldova) are imported during the season, and fruit imported from the Netherlands is re-export from third countries outside the main season.
