Strawberries in Poland - prices down

2021-02-15 11:54
The cold winter that has come to Poland has left its mark on the fresh fruit and vegetable market. Its impact was also visible in the wholesale trade of imported strawberries. Current imports have decreased, even though the supply of strawberries in Spain has increased week by week. But our importers did not want to risk importing the still relatively expensive fruit in the reality of such a weak market as our still lamed lock down, which closed the possibility of selling the fruit to the HoReCa channel, the main customer for strawberries in winter.

Now, however, the prices of imported strawberries at the Polish wholesale have finally come down. The question is whether this is a one-off correction or the beginning of a trend that will replicate what is happening to strawberry prices locally in Spain. There, the downward trend has continued since the third week of the year. According to data from week five, the average price of strawberries at the producer in the province of Huelva was €2.19/kg. The week before, it was 2.32 euros/kg, so the decrease was 5.6 per cent. To add, current strawberry prices in Spain are lower than in the same period last year. In the fifth week of 2020, the average price was €2.53/kg.

Spain is still at the beginning of its strawberry harvesting season. By the fifth week, only 6 per cent of them had been harvested there. Now, however, with each week the harvest should increase dynamically until April. And this will build up downward pressure on prices. In the Polish wholesale market, prices of imported strawberries fell from 17.00-21.00 PLN/kg to 15.0-19.00 PLN/kg, i.e. by 10.5 per cen
