Strawberries prices in Poland without a clear trend

2021-03-08 11:29
The season for trading imported strawberries on the Polish wholesale market has, so far at least, developed rather sluggishly. This is largely due to the coronavirus pandemic and the blockades maintained by European governments. The fresh strawberry market is particularly affected by the closure of the HoReCa channel, as it was the restaurants that provided much of the winter demand for this fruit.

In addition, prices of imported strawberries remain relatively high as a consequence of the lower current supply of these fruits. On the Polish wholesale market, the prices of imported strawberries (still largely Egyptian, but with an increasing share of imports from Spain) have been fluctuating in recent weeks, but there has been no clear trend in these changes. As a result, prices in importers' wholesale offers are now mostly 16.00-20.00 PLN/kg.

In Spain, the strawberry harvest campaign is still at a fairly early stage. The figures for week 8 show that 16.4 per cent of the quantity of strawberries predicted for the entire season has been picked. As far as prices are concerned, week eight brought another drop, with the average price dropping from €2.22/kg to €2.14/kg, or 3.6 per cent. But it remains significantly higher year-on-year, as it was €1.32/kg in the eighth week of 2020. It is therefore now higher year-on-year by as much as 62 per cent.
